FAQ

Can I use a mouse with this tutorial?
This tutorial is only meant for Tablets. I have never used a mouse to draw with only to sprite. There are tutorials for the pen tool in photoshop that is great for mouse users, just search pen tool tutorial in the sites search engine.

I thought you said you weren't going to update this :stinkeye:?
...^^; changed my mind :iconhurrplz:

Will you make another tutorial for those that have a different program?
No

Will you be updating your spriting tutorial?
Maybe but not anytime soon. But for the time being you can check out a spriting tutorial that ~WaterTrainer created [link] Or a video tutorial that ~Ghostmetal10 created [link] They are both very good and simple.

Can you do a video tutorial for this I don't like to read?

Does Paint SAI work for Mac's?
METHOD #1: According to ~Duo1 Paint SAI can work on Mac's. However you need to download and extra progam to do it. He suggested this site [link] I don't have a Mac so if you have trouble ask ~Duo1 or contact that site.

METHOD #2: *kaitoooo Found another method for making Paint SAI work on a Mac. Please go here for all information [link] Be sure to direct all questions to him if you get stuck or lost.

I set the canvas for 6x6 inch, but its really small. What should I do?
Set the dpi/resolution to 300.

Wow, thanks for the help! I'll try to start posting my stuff after honing my skills a little bit more.

I do have one question, though. How do you make your lines so darn smooth? Even in the sketch phase! I assume it comes down to practice, but wow are my lines janky looking. I am using a different program, though. That may be it. Using Clip Studio Paint, and it's a WAY better alternative than GIMP 2, which is what I was limited to before.

EDIT: I just realized that the pressure sensitive WIDTH variable maaaaybe wasn't a good idea for lineart (to be fair, it was on by default). I'll try again soon with that off and see if it comes out better.

Glad to help ^^ Practice helps, but also take your time. It isn't uncommon for me to spend 3-5 hours sketching, spriting, or doing these full color drawings. It might be the only thing I'll work on all day.

Here's my first attempt that I'm fairly happy with:
roboreuniclus.deviantart.com/a…

Took me a while to actually starting following all of your instructions and still more to polish up my style. I still feel like the lines and shading are pretty rough, but the concept itself I'm happy with.

Hi, me again! I tried this tutorial out and at the Magic Wand part, it keeps doing this

Here are the settings I have, which are the ones you used, is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Edit: Is it okay to use the deselect tool instead? Or do you have a better idea.

1. Change the color difference to be lower, 107 might be too high.
2. check the lineart for any holes/gaps and close them up.
3. Check the resolution of your image and make sure it is 300 (Canvas>Change Resolution)
4. Turn off anti-aliasing.

You can use the deselect tool but it will be time consuming since it'd be by hand....There is no reason why the magic wand shouldn't work after checking the list above.

how did you paste the texture within the fakemon's selection??

:iconjesgrad07:
JESGRAD07 Featured By Owner Sep 9, 2016   Digital Artist
Your going to have to select the negative/empty space around your Pokemon and erase the extra texture by cutting it or using the eraser tool. This process is similar to step 3. Don't forget to hide the texture layer so it's not in the way while you are trimming it.

How did you get the 'spread option?' I think I have an outdated version. Sweating a little...

Actually that is a drop down menu with a lot of different brush shapes. If you select the arrow next to it it should bring up a list of choices. Usually it says "[None]" like the one below it.

Okay but what version of SAI are you using? I don't have the option for Soothing and stuff.

Well I am not sure what version I had when I made this tutorial, but I have version 1.1.0 now. And I see that the names have changed but they are the same thing. Stroke Stabilizer is the Smoothing options and Pressure stabilizer is the pressure option.

Hey I really appreciate this tutorial, but haven't yet got SAI >.>.

I noticed quite a few spelling/sentence errors if you want to change them. I'm quite the detector for this kind of thing, but didn't raise them the first time I read it.

- The first white text under the black bar at the top ("This is how") has two problems: [1.] "clear" should be "clearly" , which is actually a fairly subtle problem. We use phrases like "to make as clear as possible" which is fine, but in this context, saying "I'll explain it" has to be followed with "clearly" due to the nature of what you're saying (explanations aren't "clear" the way objects are (crystals), even though it's a metaphor. "making" something has the air of the object being actually clear) because it's an adverb rather than an adjective; [2.] "lets" should be "let's" (contraction: short for "let us", joined by apostrophe).

- There is a punctuation issue in the paragraph for Hardware but it's not as big a deal. I noticed more places throughout the tutorial that should probably have commas to be technically correct or perfect (afaik), but it doesn't hinder the reading and is a bit annoying just to include them. So that's up to you. Just ask.

- Same paragraph you have "Mine was one $100" which is obviously a typo/leftover error. Eliminate "one".

- I'm at Step 1 and I'm thinking over the 2nd para, 1st sentence, ending with "to sketch with". Being technically perfect, again, I don't think we're meant to end sentences with "with", but that's also breaking down as a rule because some sentences become really clunky otherwise. In this case, you can reword it (and this is just a suggestion; you don't have to change it imo): "pick a blue or black [pen for sketching]". You're ending on a verb rather than a preposition and it avoids "with" altogether. Good to know for future ref.

- In the bubble just under Step 2, you have "make sure your layer with your sketch" which is another combined sentence typo. I think it should be "Make sure the layer with your sketch is selected" etc.

- Paragraph under that bubble, "change "Smoothing" to a higher setting [than] you are comfortable with". To avoid "with", if inclined, you can instead say "to a higher setting that's more comfortable". Notice again ending on something declarative (in this case an adjective).

- Next para "The size of the pen tool"  ends with "its on a 6x6", which should be "[it's] on a 6x6". It's another contraction (for "it is").

- Bubble under that has a sentence without the first word capitalised ("...strokes. it will keep your lines...")

- Down to the bubble about colouring the fakemon (yellow text), there is an error very commonly missed. Where you talk about turning the colour setting down, say "100s" instead "100's" (no apostrophe) because it's *not* a contraction. You're talking about multiples of numbers in the range of 100 which means there's many of them. So we use an 's' like other plurals. You'd use the apostrophe if something belonged to the number 100 ("100's double zeroes" lol, the same way we might say "Bob's boat", which you're obviously not), or if you were making a contraction from "100 is" (e.g. "100's the number" => "100 is the number"). People get confused because it's a number and want to separate it or avoid the 's' looking like a 5 or something. But there's no longer any concern with typing these days; the 's' is usually small or can be made to be small if needed. This mistake happens a lot with dates. Most people say "90's" when they should say "90s" (or more correctly " '90s" with an apostrophe first! - to show we've shortened from "1990"). You might still argue whether this counts as an error becase it's good to not confuse people about whether it's an 's' or '5', but I honestly think it becomes more confusing if we don't stick more consistently with our rules. Hopefully understanding would improve.

- Next sentence "If the colour bleeds" correct "suppose" to "supposed".

- White paragraph to the right of that bubble, and down to the last sentence, you should have "Once [you're] done". Contraction again.

- The bit about shading in black for the farthest leg, I'm confused by "as its under the body". If you mean you've used 100% black not *only* because it's the farthest part of the body but also because it's underneath the belly, then say "as [it's] under the body" (contraction: "it is").

- Two paras down "this acts like a smudge tool, but [it's] much more ridged" (contraction). Same para near the end "[It's] more of a scribble".

- Texture bubble "[It's] saved to its own file...". Sama pare "It is [subtle] on some colours" (typo).

Definitely saw and told you about spelling problems! :D

No worries!

(It probably wasn't the smartest use of my time, but eh, haha.)

Btw, that first problem about "clearly" is because you need an adverb, whereas "clear" in the other example is just an adjective. I overcomplicated it...
